CLIMATE
STORYTELLING

Translating climate science into a visual, readable and human narrative.

Climate data journalism and visual storytelling

Climate change is often communicated through graphs, datasets, technical reports
and scientific terminology that can be difficult to interpret outside academic or research environments.

The challenge is not only scientific, but also narrative:
how can complex atmospheric and environmental processes become understandable,
engaging and meaningful for a wider audience?

The Burning Rim approaches this challenge through climate storytelling,
combining scientific accuracy with visual structure and editorial communication.

Storytelling does not replace science. Instead, it acts as a bridge between
scientific knowledge and public understanding, transforming fragmented information
into a coherent narrative system.

Every climate process involves connections:
the sea interacts with the atmosphere,
atmospheric circulation influences precipitation,
human activities alter radiative balance,
and regional changes become part of a larger global transformation.

Scientific data alone can describe these mechanisms,
but storytelling helps readers perceive their relationships and consequences.

The project uses visual hierarchy, thematic sections and editorial structure
to guide the reader across multiple scales:
from local Mediterranean warming to upper atmospheric dynamics,
from ocean heat storage to aviation emissions.

This approach is inspired by scientific journalism, visual communication
and data-driven editorial design, where clarity and readability are essential.

Narrative structure also plays an important psychological role.
Climate change is frequently perceived as distant, abstract or overwhelming.
Storytelling can transform complex systems into understandable experiences,
helping readers connect scientific evidence with real-world impacts.

The Mediterranean basin becomes therefore not only a geographical region,
but also a narrative landscape where climate transformation can be observed,
interpreted and communicated.

The Burning Rim aims to create an immersive reading experience where science,
atmosphere and environmental change are connected through a continuous editorial flow.

VISUAL STRUCTURE

Layout, hierarchy and design help organize scientific information into a readable narrative flow.

DATA & NARRATIVE

Scientific observations become part of a connected story rather than isolated datasets.

ACCESSIBILITY

Complex atmospheric and climate processes are translated into clear and understandable communication.

WHEN SCIENCE BECOMES READABLE

Climate storytelling transforms data into interpretation,
helping readers understand how environmental systems evolve and interact.

Through narrative structure and visual communication,
scientific complexity becomes accessible without losing depth or accuracy.

The Burning Rim combines atmosphere, science and editorial design
to create a readable map of climate transformation in the Mediterranean region.
